Where you fit, what you do, and why certification matters
Learning Objectives

-
Describe the size and growth of the legal cannabis industry.

Explain the four core duties of a budtender.
-
Identify the main roles on a dispensary team.

List the professional habits expected from day one.
Walk into any cannabis dispensary and look for the person standing behind the counter. They might be helping a nervous first-time shopper, checking a customer’s ID, or explaining the difference between two products on the shelf. That person is the budtender. They are the first face a customer sees and the last person a customer talks to before walking out the door. When people remember a dispensary, they usually remember how the budtender made them feel.
A budtender is part guide, part teacher, and part salesperson. On a busy day, you might talk with dozens of people, each one looking for something different. One customer wants help sleeping. Another wants to relax after work. A third is buying cannabis for the very first time and has no idea where to start. Your job is to listen, to explain things in plain language, and to help each person leave with a product that fits their needs and their budget.
This chapter is your front door to the whole book. We will look at how big the cannabis industry has become, what a budtender actually does all day, who else works in a dispensary, and why earning your certification can set you apart. We will also talk about the simple, professional habits that make a great budtender from the very first shift.
You do not need any experience to start. You only need a willingness to learn and a desire to help people. By the end of this book, that face behind the counter will be yours — and you will know exactly what to do.
