Scenario-Based Questions

Instructions: Read each scenario and write how you, as the coach, would respond. Note whether the request is in scope or requires a referral.

Scenario 1

A new client says, “My doctor put me on blood pressure medicine, but I’d rather just fix it with food. Tell me exactly what to eat instead of the pills.”

Scenario 2

During a session, a client mentions they felt dizzy and short of breath during their last workout and wants to push hard today anyway.

Scenario 3

A motivated client asks you to design their whole week of workouts and meals and says, “Just tell me what to do and I’ll do it.”

Show sample answers
  1. Out of scope to replace medication with food; never tell a client to stop prescribed medicine. Encourage them to keep taking it and talk with their doctor; support general healthy habits alongside the doctor’s plan. 2. Stop and refer — dizziness and shortness of breath are warning signs; do not push hard today. 3. Use ‘partner, not boss’: explore what the client can realistically sustain and let them help choose the plan, rather than imposing a strict one.

Decision-Making: In Scope or Out?

Instructions: For each request, write IN SCOPE or REFER OUT, and name who to refer to if needed.

1. “Help me build a habit of walking after dinner.”

2. “Adjust the dose of my diabetes medication on days I exercise.”

3. “Show me how to read a food label.”

4. “Design a meal plan to treat my high cholesterol.”

5. “I’ve felt hopeless and uninterested in everything for weeks.”

Show sample answers
  1. IN SCOPE. 2. REFER OUT — doctor (medication is medical). 3. IN SCOPE. 4. REFER OUT — registered dietitian. 5. REFER OUT — mental health professional/doctor.
