Scenario-Based Questions

Scenario 1 — The Interview Fear |
Marcus, 38, is re-entering the workforce after being laid off from a manufacturing job. He has been submitting job applications but consistently avoids preparing for interviews. When his coach asks about this, Marcus says: “If I don’t really try, then it’s not really a failure.” His coach notices this is an important insight.

1. What is the coach’s first priority in this situation — and why?

2. What one coaching question would be most effective to help Marcus explore the insight he just shared?

3. Should the coach offer job interview tips, or help Marcus explore what he just said? Explain your reasoning in terms of the coaching mindset.

Scenario 2 — The Blurred Boundary |
A coach has been working with a client for three months. The coach now learns that the client is a close friend of the coach’s spouse. The coach is wondering whether to continue the coaching relationship.

1. What ethical concern does this situation raise?

2. What term from Chapter 1 describes this type of situation?

3. What should the coach do, and how should the coach communicate this to the client?

Scenario 3 — The Scope of Practice Dilemma |
A client has been describing persistent sadness, difficulty concentrating, and a feeling that “nothing is worth doing” for the past several weeks. She says she does not believe she needs therapy and just wants to keep working on her career goals.

1. What is the coach observing in this client?

2. What are the coach’s ethical obligations in this situation?

3. Write two to three sentences you would say to this client to address her concerns while honoring your professional boundaries.

Scenario 1 (Marcus): Honor the insight Marcus shared; ask a question that deepens it (e.g., “What does that mean for how you’ve been approaching your search?”); avoid jumping to interview tips until he is ready.
Scenario 2 (Blurred Boundary): This is a dual relationship. Disclose the situation, discuss it openly with the client, and consider ending or transferring the coaching relationship.
Scenario 3 (Scope Dilemma): The description suggests possible depression. Acknowledge the concern, explain the limits of coaching, offer a warm referral, and continue coaching only if appropriate alongside professional support.
