Case study: Priya Decides to Certify
Priya has worked as an administrative assistant for five years. She learned everything on the job and never took a formal class. One day, a better-paying job opens at a large company. Many of the other applicants have college training, and Priya worries that her experience alone will not be enough.
Then Priya learns about the NCCB Certified Administrative Assistant exam, which is open to self-taught workers. She studies for six weeks using her textbook and workbook, and she passes. On her next job application, she lists the CAA credential right at the top. She gets an interview, and the hiring manager mentions the credential as one reason she was called in.
Answer these questions about the case study.
1. Why did Priya worry about applying for the new job?
2. How did the CAA exam fit Priya’s situation as a self-taught worker?
3. What did earning the credential prove to employers?
4. If you were in Priya’s place, what would you do? Explain your thinking.
Show sample answers
1. Many other applicants had college training, and Priya had only on-the-job experience, so she feared she would not stand out.
2. The CAA exam is open to self-taught workers, so it gave Priya a fair way to prove her skills without a degree.
3. It proved that her skills met a national standard, giving employers a reason to trust her ability.
4. Answers will vary. A strong answer explains a clear choice, such as studying for and taking the exam to prove skills.
